A Few Quick Tips To Becoming A Healthy Eater

I have decided to provide everyone with a few quick changes you can make in your diets that can help lead you to a healthier lifestyle.  These tips are small, but the smallest difference can have a huge effect on your health if you give it enough time!

 1.  Switch from white bread to wheat bread

Now I know the taste is different between white bread and wheat bread, but switching to wheat bread can have an impact.  For example if you buy wheat bread you are guaranteed a low glycemic index, nutritional fibers and the best part better health.

Here is a wheat bread that I would recommend: Nature's Own Wheat Bread

                                                                2. Switch to almond milk

Another great way to increase your health is to switch to almond milk.  Some of the great benefits of almond milk include weight management, heart health because it doesn't contain cholesterol or saturated fat and it keeps your bones strong!  Since your bones tend to become weary as you age, almond milk can help to keep your bones strong.

Here is a almond milk that I would recommend: Silk Almond Milk

                                                                3. Switch to organic eggs

Switching to organic eggs can have a great benefit to your health. First off, the switch can guarantee that the chickens cannot be genetically modified or treated with pesticides or herbicides.  This is great because non-organic eggs can have an effect on your health because of how the chickens are raised.

Here are the organic eggs that I would recommend: Organic Valley Eggs

Feel free to leave your comments below with other products that you would recommend switching to!

Tear-Shaped Nuts

I have decided to dedicate this post to the many benefits of tear-shaped nuts!

As many of you may know tear-shaped nuts or almonds are a great source of nutrition.  They are a great source of nutrients.  These healthy nutrients include, fiber, riboflavin, magnesium and calcium. Believe it or not just a single serving of nuts (about 7 almonds) has more calcium than any other type of nut with a whopping total of 22 milligrams.  Nuts can even help to lower your blood cholesterol levels because they contain a healthier non-saturated kind of fat, which also make them great for your heart!

One more thing that makes consuming almonds very beneficial is that they can even help to prevent blood clots.  This is important especially for women who are smokers who also take birth control because blood clots can be a very common occurrence to women in this situation.  Since this can be very dangerous it is important that women especially in this situation try to reduce their risk of loosing their lives to a blood clot.

So next time you are at the grocery store make sure you add almonds to your grocery list and you will be on your way to preventing diseases and loading up on your daily dose of nutrients!

If you shop at a local whole foods, make sure that you buy almonds, that are not loaded with sugars and salts to enhance this flavor.  Doing this could actually hinder you more then it could help to keep you healthy.

dumbbell-1409762921GGf-2

Join a gym:
If you haven't already get a gym membership!  It is easy to be motivated when you are around a bunch of people that love to workout.  There are also many perks that come with going to the gym; such as workout classes, personal trainers and masseuses.  These are all great reasons to get your membership today.

Make your workouts enjoyable:Once you get your gym membership, decide exactly where your niche is and make your workouts fun!  Take your time to try everything at the gym and see what you seem to like the most.  Try to take as many workout classes as you can whether it be a core workout, Zumba or weight training see what workouts you like the most and decide what you want to work on.  Once you find a workout that you love it will make your workout much more enjoyable.

Don't be afraid to cheat:It is ok to have a cheat day every once and awhile.  Nobody is perfect and always make sure to allow yourself to eat those forbidden foods every once and awhile.  It will make living a healthier lifestyle much easier when you know there is always a little room for a snack here and there.

Be an early riser:Another way to withhold a healthy lifestyle is to make sure you give yourself an early start.  Sleeping in can make you feel groggy and make you lazy for the rest of your day.  If you give yourself an early start it will give you more time to get things done as well as keep you motivated throughout your day.

Cranberry Juice Good For You?

cranberry-juiceMany of you may not realize it but cranberry juice is actually good for you for many reasons!  I wanted to take the time to recommended cranberry juice to you guys by highlighting its many benefits.

First off my favorite benefit of cranberry juice is that it, believe it or not, helps prevent gum disease.  According to fitness magazine.com, "experts theorize that a component of the juice called nondialysable material (NDM) inhibits bacteria from sticking to the gums."  Although preventing gum disease is a great benefit of cranberry juice experts suggest limiting your intake to no more than one glass (6 to 8 ounces) daily.  Due to the high sugar content in cranberry juice experts feel that it is important to limit your intake.  Heidi Reichenberger, RD and a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, "suggests that it is important to make sure that your cranberry juice label says 100 percent juice, not 'juice drink' or 'cocktail'."

Cranberry juice also helps to prevent tooth decay, speed up digestion and even becomes a aid in weightless.  Cranberry juice helps to prevent tooth decay by preventing bacteria from growing.  Cranberry also helps to speed up your digestion by being rich in fibre, and fibre is great for your digestive system.  When it comes to weightless, cranberry can be an aid because it has tons of antioxidants and a glass in the morning can help you to consume less calories.  Cranberry juice can be a great substitute for any other soda and is a great drink to have in the morning with breakfast.

So drink up, and get your cranberry juice today.  Since it is important to buy a cranberry juice that says 100 percent juice here is one that I recommend Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice.  You can find this 100 percent juice at your local grocery store, start to enjoy its many benefits today!

Healthy Appetite

I would like to take the time to write a review of Ellie Kriegers healthy appetite segment on the food network.  I love this segment and found her hearty portobello benedict a great healthy alternative to recommend to you guys.  I would give Ellie's segment a 10/10 for moms who are looking for those quick healthy meals to make for the family!

macro-mushroom-gillsThis healthy appetite segment starts out with Ellie talking about the benefits of mushrooms.  Saying that they are loaded with nutrition, such as b vitamins and antioxidants.  She takes the mushrooms cuts off the stems and covers the mushrooms in organic olive oil and sprinkles about an eighth of a teaspoon of salt on them, she then puts them on a grill pan (7 minutes on each side).  After she prepares the mushrooms she begins to talk about the benefits of eggs.  Suggesting to eat 7 whole eggs a week.  She then begins to prepare the eggs by separating the egg and putting just the yolks in the bowl.  She then adds hot water to the eggs and mixes them up.  Ellie proceeds by taking out her canadian bacon and replacing her mushrooms with the bacon on the grill pan while then adding her eggs to a skillet.  Once the eggs and canadian bacon are done being cooked she tops the portobello mushrooms with the eggs and bacon and you have your hearty portobello mushroom breakfast!  I thought this was a great quick healthy breakfast!  Ellie does a great job of showing you quick ways to be healthy and that is why I enjoy watching her quick healthy meals on the food network.  I highly suggest you check out her segment and let me know what you think.

Matcha Powder

As I have mentioned before matcha is a new and upcoming drink that is delicious and super healthy for you!  It can be used to drink, bake with or to even make smoothies with!

Matcha tea isolated on white
That is why I have decided to dedicate a whole post to recommend matcha powder to all of you healthy seekers out there by highlighting some of its major benefits.  First off, if you go to the main website for matcha the main benefits are the first thing you see; fat burner, cancer fighter, concentration increaser and energy booster.  As you can see so far matcha has the ability to increase your energy and concentration like coffee, but it doesn't have nearly as much caffenie  and is much better for you, for example, drinking one cup of matcha powder is equivalent to drinking ten cups of green tea.  And we all know that green tea is already great for you.  The reason that matcha has been found to be so much better then green tea is because when you drink matcha you consume the entire leaf, therefore receiving 100% of the leaf, which doesn't happen when you just use a tea bag to make your green tea.  Also found from the link I posted above, when you brew a cup of green tea water can only extract a fraction of green teas benefits.  This meaning that the majority actually remains unused, trapped in the tea leaves.  Matcha also has a benefit to those who are trying to loose weight.  If you consume matcha before you work out, you are going to loose 25% more calories then if you didn't drink matcha before your work out.

If you guys like what you are hearing, I have posted a link to amazon below for the matcha that I prefer to use myself.  It is the #1 best seller on Amazon and is a product that I continue to buy over and over again.

Feel free to let me know if you guys like matcha just as much as I do!

The Chew

Apple bite

I would like to use this blog post to write a review for a show called "The Chew".  The Chew airs on ABC and explores life through food, fitness and friendships.  I thought I would review one of their episodes for you guys, especially for those of you that have never seen it before.  The episode that I chose to review was entitled Delicious Foods You've Never Tasted Before.

Review:

In this episode they show their audience unique recipes that most people have never tried before.  I like how they start off the show by casually talking about the craziest foods that they have tried.  One of the girls even told the story of when she tried sea urchin, gross!  One of the first things they try are waffle cones that are filled with ice cream.  I thought that this idea would be great for a low calorie dessert after dinner.  The next part of the show demonstrates how to cook a grilled vegetable quinoa salad.  The reason they chose to make an episode demonstrating how to cook a grilled quinoa salad is because a lady sent a video in asking how to cook with it because it is so healthy for you.  For example, I learned from this episode that quinoa has the 9 amino acids that your body cannot make on its own.  They also go on to talk about the correct way to prepare the quinoa, which is good for someone who has never had to cook quinoa in anything before.  Another thing that I love about this show is how the whole cast jokes around with each other to really make the show entertaining, especially, because most cooking shows are so dry that no one ends up wanting to watch them!  I would rate this show a 10/10, which is why I picked it for you.  I definitely feel that an audience of 18+ would get the most out of this show, which is where my 10/10 rating comes from.

You And I Healthy

As a blogger myself, I thought that I should take the time to comment on some of the positive aspects of my blog.

Content:

I feel that the content on my blog, is exactly what a blog about being healthy should be about; I include healthy recipes, healthy tips and I have even just posted an article on ways that you guys might be actually preventing your weightless.  These tips are great because some people don't realize that what they are doing is actually hurting them more then it is helping them.  I feel that posting everyday and relating to your audience makes for a very successful blog, which is something that I try to do.

Design:

The pictures and layout of my blog makes it very open to readers.  With pages to look through on the top and an even list of blog posts as well as links on the side of my page it is easy to click on the blog post that interests you the most.  I am a very neat and organized person and I feel that it is important to keep my blog that way to keep it easy to read for my viewer.  I do feel that I could add more color to my blog though, to make it more inviting.

That is why I am always open to comments and suggestions!  Please let me know what you guys think I can do to make my blog the best it can be for you.  I am always willing to hear more and learn more from my peers!

How You Could Be Preventing Your Own Weightloss

I found this blog post recently and I thought that there were some things that could be added to it.  The link to this blog post that I found is, 15 Ways You Might Be Stunting Your Weight Loss and it basically talks about the 15 ways that you could be stunting your weightless (in other words preventing it).  This blog post talks about the certain ways that people prevent themselves from loosing weight.  These ways are the following; not eating enough calories, starving and then binging, not all smoothies are healthy, eating protein for breakfast, being obsessed with fad diets, overdosing on low-calorie snacks, relying on healthy processed food, cutting out nutritional carbs, eating healthy only when it's convenient, snacking with false confidence, relying on supplements, eating while distracted, being too hard on yourself, feeling like you need to clear your plate and assuming that gluten-free means healthy.  I thought it was a very interesting post because many people have no idea, that what they are doing, although they think it might be healthy is actually preventing them from loosing weight.  That is why I have decided to add a few more things to this list.

16. It's a combo
You can't just eat healthy and think you are going to lose weight right away, just like you can't workout and think you are going to lose weight right away.  It takes two.  You need to remember that if you are trying to lose weight that it is important to not only eat healthy but to make time to workout as well.

17. Stress
Being stressed can often hinder weightless, or even make you gain weight.  Most people do not realize it, but working out and eating healthy can sometimes mean nothing when you are stressed.  This is why it is important to try and live a stress-free lifestyle by always being prepared and leaving yourself enough time in the morning so you don't start off your day in a rush.

18. Don't forget to sleep
Just because you should avoid stress, doesn't mean you should avoid sleep to.  Even if you are busy it is important that you make sure to get your 8 hours of sleep every night.  Try not to exceed your 8 hours, for oversleeping can sometimes hinder you rather then help you.

Healthy. Happy. Life.

When searching for blogs in my niche.  I found a very successful healthy blog that I wanted to share with everyone.  This blog was created to provide readers with some healthy vegan recipes.  This blog; Healthy. Happy. Life has a very open feeling once clicked upon.  Kathy, the blogger for Healthy. Happy. Life. is very personable when she posts blogs, and you really feel like she is talking directly to you.  You can tell that Kathy is very advanced in this area because she has many personalized links and ads on the side of her blog as well as many blog postings throughout the years.  Kathy has even received  1,200 shares for her blog about 105 Back to School Plant Based Recipes.

Audience:

It is clear that her target audience includes mothers who are interested in keeping their kids healthy during the school year.  You can see that Kathy's target market is right, because all of the comments on this blog are filled with people who absolutely love the blog!  They love that Kathy shares photos of the things that she is doing, so that they can relate to her!  Kathy uses Facebook, twitter, pintrest, and google plus to connect with her users.

Design:

The design of Kathy's blog is colorful and very open.  There are lots of photos and videos located all over the blog.  After seeing what other people have liked on Kathy's blog she can continue to post the things that her viewers love best.  The only downfall of the blog is that there is a lot of information being thrown at you once you get onto the blog.  I can see it sometimes becoming confusing for a reader to try and find out what is going on, on the blog and where exactly they need to click, to find what they need.

Other then that I feel like Healthy. Happy. Life is a great blog that shows how successful a blog can be.

Pan-Seared Trout With Italian-Style Salsa

I have found to love this recipe for dinner.  It is quick, easy and delicious!

pan-seared-trout-salsa-m

Ingredients:

6 (6 0z.) trout fillets

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

4 tablespoons olive oil

Italian style salsa

garnish: lemon slices

(this recipe will serve 6 people)

First take out your trout fillets and marinate them with salt and pepper (you are welcome to add any other seasonings that you prefer to marinate your fish with.)  Then get out a skillet and add olive oil to the pan to make sure that the trouts do not stick to the pan, once the olive oil is added you can begin to cook three of your trout fillets.  Depending on how you like your fish, I usually recommened 1 to 2 minutes on each side, to give you the perfect trout.  You can always test the fish to see if its down by checking to see if the fish flakes with a utensil.  Once these fillets are finished cooking you can repeat these steps for the remaining trouts.  Once all of the fillets have been cooked top with with your Italian style salsa, garnish with lemons if you desire and then serve your trout immediately.

This Pan-Seared Trout is a great idea for a fast family dinner!  If you are hesitant about saving your leftover fish and just plan on making this meal for yourself you can always change the amounts required in the recipe to account for as many people as you like, even if it's just for yourself.

Even More Tips To Becoming Healthy

Screenshot 2015-10-02 12.52.07

Going off of my previous blog post I thought that it would be important to include even more ways to becoming healthy!  I have found that there can never be to many options for becoming healthy and that it why I have decided to provide more with you.

Being healthy doesn't just mean eating healthy, it also includes the things you drink, the things you eat and how active you are.  Without all three of these components it is much harder to be considered a "healthy" individual.

Eating Healthy

Now here I am not saying only eat celery and avoid anything that is delicious.  I am saying though that it is important to avoid only eating fatty foods.  I am not saying you shouldn't because everyone has their cheat day, but try to make time for a salad, or a rice and chicken bowl for at least once meal throughout your week.  Making sure to include those healthy meals during your week can be very helpful to helping you become healthy.

Drinking Right

It is important to avoid soda.  Not only is soda bad for your health, with all of the chemicals that are included in soda.  There are also a lot of calories For example in a 16 oz bottle of coke there are 184 calories.  Those almost 200 calories can be avoided by just choosing to drink water with your meals instead of soda.

Exercise frequently

Even if you only have 20 minutes to run on the treadmill.  Do it!  It is important to remember that it is better to make some time to work out then none at all.  If you say you have no time, i'm sure you can still take 20 minutes to get a quick workout in.  Plus working out releases dopamine, which leads to making you a much happier person.

Eat Less Salt

You might think that since you don't add salt to the meals that you make that you are already reducing the amount of salt that you eat daily. This is not true.  In fact about three quarters of the meals you eat already have salt in them.  Some examples of foods that have mounds of salt already included in them are breakfast cereals, soups, breads, and sauces.  Although there are many more, these are just some examples.  Not only will reducing the amount of salt you eat help keep you healthy, but it will also help to keep your blood pressure low to reduce your chances of developing heart disease or having a stroke.  It is also important to realize that you can be aware of how much salt you are intaking daily.  When you are shopping look at the products are are buying to see how much salt is included in the product.  The recommended daily intake of salts is 1500 mg.  This can be converted to 0.75 teaspoons of salt.  This recommended amount is being surpassed unfortunately today with an average daily salt intake of 3400 mg.  With most of that, obviously coming from processed foods.  This message can relay back to my previous point made in previous blog posts.  It is much better to make a meal from scratch, then to succumb to the so cheap and so available fast good options that are everywhere.  Avoiding fast food and cooking meals at home can definitely help reduce your salt intake and lead you to a much healthier lifestyle.

5 Quick Tips To Make You Healthier

Proper nutrition and physical activity to healthy life - Stock image _iStock_000043776780_Small

Being healthy is something so many people want to do.  Wanting to do something doesn't always mean that it will be accomplished though.  That is why I have decided to provide everyone with some tips on some easy ways to be healthy.  These do not take much effort and are very easy to incorporate into your lifestyle.

  1. Park your car far away

When you are going to the supermarket or the mall say, get some extra excersice in and try and park in the back of the parking lot.  These extra steps can give you that extra cardio, when your days are too busy to get a workout in.

2.  Drink Matcha Powder

Although many of you many have never heard of matcha powder.  It is new and upcoming and has a lot of health benefits.  As a matcha drinker myself I have done a lot of research and found that drinking one glass of matcha is equivalent to drinking ten cups of green tea.  Matcha also helps improve your focus, increase your metabolism and increase your skin health as well.

3. Take the stairs when you can

Although elevators and escalators are tempting take the stairs when you can.  Taking the stairs is a good way to get your heart rate up and going when you are out and about running errands.

4.  Buy better bread

It is known by all that wheat bread is better than white bread.  So next time you are out shopping at the store instead of picking up your usual white bread make the switch over to wheat bread and you will be on track to being that much healthier!

5. Replace mash potatoes with veggies

Instead of using the common mash potatoes side with your meats, replace those mash potatoes with some veggies!  If you are not a huge veggie fan, fruit will do just fine too.

Moderation Is Key

Eating healthy is good and all, but it is important that you eat your meals in moderation.  I have struggled with moderation, especially when there happens to be a big meal in front of me.  Even if I am full I always think that I need to finish the whole plate even though I am not hungry anymore.  That is why smaller portions are the solution.  If you are cooking something for yourself and don't plan on eating it later, cut the recepie in half.  This way you won't be tempted to finish the whole meal, when it turned out to be more than you thought.  Another way to add moderation to your lifestyle is to snack.  Now, I am not saying sit on the couch and eat chips after your day is over, but an apple with peanut butter, or a 100 calorie snack bar will be just fine.  Doing this will make you want to eat less when it is time for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  This is why I believe snacking is good if you do it the right way.  Healthy snacks between meals can help prevent overeating and will definitely be helpful in brining you closer to your goal of being healthy!  Not only will this help you make smaller portions, but it will also help you eat slower because you won't be starving by the time you cook your meal.  Eating slower will allow you to know you are full before it's too late, which can also help you be successful.

Canadian Waffles

cf_morning-waffles_main

For my first healthy post I decided to share a quick and easy receipe for Canadian waffles.  My roommates and I have found this as a quick and easy breakfast solution and the leftovers are great too!

Ingredients:

-Five slices of whole wheat waffles

-Five pieces of Canadian bacon

-Five Eggs

-Olive Oil

-Maple Syrup

(this reciepe is made for 5 servings)

First get out five whole wheat waffles and put them in the toaster.

While you are toasting your waffles, get out a skillet and begin to cook five pieces of bacon, add some olive oil to your skillet to make sure that the bacon does not stick to the skillet.

While the bacon is cooking, take out another skillet, pour olive oil into the skillet and crack your five eggs into the pan.  Cook these over easy and once they are completed add the Canadian bacon and over easy eggs to the top of your waffle.

After this you just need to add maple syrup, as much as you prefer to the top of the Canadian Waffle, and you have your breakfast!

This meal only takes 20 minutes to prepare and if you make enough servings it can last you through your week.

*Quick tip:  Leftovers are great for time saving.  If you spend 20 minutes cooking breakfast on Monday you can save yourself time throughout your week! Always plan your week ahead of time so you know what days you are able to spend 20 minutes cooking breakfast and which mornings are good for leftovers and you will be on your way to a healthy lifestyle in no time!

About Me

Hi, My name is Healthy Eater and I write this You and I Healthy blog to give students, the working class and those who are just too busy a way to eat healthy in a short amount of time.  With fast food on the rise it is so easy these days to give into the pressure, trust me I have been there. As someone who works and goes to school full time, I have found it difficult over the years to find ways to be healthy when time is not on my side.  As a senior in college I have had four years of not only eating on a budget but also learning what healthy meals work for me and my roommates as well.  This meaning that sometimes the "quick healthy meals" you find online are just more complicated than they look.  I have found a way to keep things simple and tasty, while saving money at the same time!  That is why I have chosen to share what I have learned with the rest of us who are just as, or more busy than I am. My goal is to provide quick, easy meals to help ease the stress of trying to be successful and healthy at the same time.  I also started this blog to provide you with little healthy tips that you may have never heard of before and that over the years I have found actually work.  If you  need to contact me, please email me below

[contact-form][contact-field label='Name' type='name' required='1'/][contact-field label='Email' type='email' required='1'/][contact-field label='Website' type='url'/][contact-field label='Comment' type='textarea' required='1'/][/contact-form]
